During the 1960s, Zitman began the construction of what would become his masterpiece: “El Trapiche,” his home-studio. Built upon the ruins of an old sugarcane mill that was part of the Trinidad-Estate in colonial times.

Throughout his life, and while his sculptural work was evolving, Zitman constructed and reconstructed El Trapice many times, using it as a stage for his sculptures.

It might be difficult to separate Zitman’s sculptures from El Trapiche, since the figures were frequently conceived to occupy a specific place inside the house, taking into account the lighting and the change in perspective when one is making their were through corridors and patios.
